WHO FOR:
This is a course based around all different sampling techniques for Legionella, Pseudomonas, TVC’s, coliforms, E. coli and chemical sampling. It is designed for Technicians and others who are required to attend sites and carry out these types of samples. Students should ideally have an understanding of water hygiene within the water system and have already had active involvement in sampling regimes, but this is not essential. It is important to note that this is a practical course on how to undertake sampling in the field, it does not cover designing of sample plans or interpretation of results. Those are covered under W278 Microbiological and Chemical Sampling Plans and Interpretation of Results.
PRE-COURSE PREPARATION:
Students will get more from the course if they already have an understanding of water hygiene in general and bacterial control methods, but these are not essential.
OBJECTIVES:
- To review and understand the reasons why and locations where we sample.
- To understand a sample plan.
- To give instruction on how to undertake the different types of sample, both Laboratory and rapid assay techniques.
- To provide theoretical knowledge via an interactive PowerPoint training session, followed by practical demonstrations within our Practical Training Area.
TOPICS COVERED:
- The law and guidance behind sampling
- Understanding a sample plan
- The different types of samples we can take
- Undertaking samples theory and practice
- How we store samples and forward to the laboratory
Includes instruction in the Practical Training Area where the student's ability to follow instructions, work by themselves, work safely in respect to their own safety and the safety of others and account for their actions in a clear unambiguous written record will be observed and assessed.
ASSESSMENT:
45 minute written exam with work in the Practical Training Area undertaking different types of water samples accounting for 25% of the exam result for this course. This will enforce application of the skills learned and observed during the practical demonstrations.
Overall course pass mark is 70%. A resit is possible for anyone failing the exam for an additional fee within 3 months of the original course. The maximum grade awarded for a resit will be a pass.
6 CPD points awarded.
Electronic certificates will be sent directly to successful delegates to the email address we hold on file.
