What is CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) describes the activities professional people use to keep up-to-date and maintain their knowledge. CPD also develops and enhances careers, and employability, by positive, structured and conscious learning. In addition you can use your CPD log to support progression to obtain full membership of Water Management Society.

Most CPD schemes describe 1 hours learning as 1 CPD point.

How does CPD work?

Any professional learning activity, such as formal training, toolbox talks, workshops, conferences, e-learning programs, technical reading and professional discussion, can be used to gather CPD points for an individual.

How does it benefit me?

Some professions require practitioners to maintain a CPD log and are prescriptive in the number of CPD points those professionals must attain annually. We do not have such draconian requirements in our industry, but by maintaining a CPD log of your activities you will be ensuring you continue to improve your ability throughout your career, making yourself a more valued employee or supplier.

  • It will help you become a more competent, confident and effective professional.
  • By recording your activities, you can show how and when you have improved your skills.
  • You will be able to reassure potential customers and employers of your willingness to not just keep up-to-date, but to enhance your offer and competitive advantage.
  • Everybody, regardless of occupation, age or educational level, can undertake CPDs as a way of recording lifelong learning.
  • Your CPD plan enables you to adapt to changes in work/industry requirements and being able to refer to your CPD log will prove your commitment to professional development.

How is it recorded?

The individual must keep his or her own CPD record, detailing what activity was undertaken, what was its objective, when it was completed, what more needs to be done to meet the objectives and the time taken (CPD Points). The WMSoc has a record-keeping log available as a download for members.
