WMSoc Training Courses - Legionella Risk Assessment of Evaporative Cooling Systems - W266

Details - UPDATED FOR 2024

City & Guilds accredited

ONE-DAY COURSE:  9.15am – 4.30pm

Lunch and refreshments provided

Printed delegate materials provided

WHO FOR:

This is not an entry level training course for new risk assessors. This course is suitable for people who have ideally attended a legionella risk assessment foundation course and those who possess surveying and legionella risk assessment experience for complex water systems. Candidates should be comfortable risk assessing without supervision and with minimal support. Ideally, they should understand controls and treatment for coolibg towers. During this course these aspects will not be covered to the level required to carry out cooling tower risk assessments. If further knowledge is required then we would strongly recommend delegates attend a foundation course in cooling tower chemistry and gain some in-field cooling tower water treatment experience.

Candidates must have a very good working knowledge of L8 and HSG 274 Part 1 including in depth knowledge of the control levels, documentation requirements and management structures outlined within these documents. In addition, they should have a good understanding of the microbiology, history and legislation related to the control of legionella.  They will also require at least a basic working knowledge and understanding of the operation of cooling towers, and their  respective water treatment programme requirements.  The aspects will only briefly be covered in an interactive revision session, to reinforce this understanding.

If candidates have limited experience of cooling tower water treatment, they are strongly recommended to attend a cooling tower chemistry course prior to this course.

PRE-COURSE PREPARATION:

Students should attend W264 Legionella Risk Assessment of Hot & Cold Water Systems Foundation or have equivalent practical surveying and risk assessing knowledge prior to attending this course.  This is not a course for candidates who have just started out in their risk assessing role, they should attend the previously mentioned W264 foundation course.

For those relying on previous experience rather than W264 course attendance, completion of W201 Legionella Control & the Law and W202 Legionellosis Causes and Impacts of Infection online modules will be required and are included in the course price.

Pre-reading of L8 and HSG 274 Part 1 would be beneficial (available as a free download from the HSE website).

OBJECTIVES:

To discuss the specific legionella risks involved in cooling systems with some work in the practical training area. Discussion of the risk assessment survey process for cooling water systems and the documentation and management procedures related to legionella control programmes. This includes:

  • The concept of identifying and recording risk levels and ratings.
  • Developing the content required in risk assessment reports & recommendations,
  • Production of a credible executive summary.

This is achieved with PowerPoint presentation, through group exercises and classroom discussions on the findings of the exercises. Therefore, candidates should be prepared for the course to be interactive and that they will be required to be collaborative and provide their contributions to the discussions arising on the day.

TOPICS COVERED:

Revision session on legal and practical requirements for effective and compliant legionella control programmes.

Group exercises based around written scheme of control records and conclusions to draw from these records.

The day includes classroom teaching with interactive discussions, practical exploration of cooling system types and dosing equipment in the practical training area and analysis of records.

ASSESSMENT:

60 minute written exam with 70% pass mark. Questions are short form answers and scenario-based answers. The students are provided with an outline set of slide notes at the beginning of the day and are encouraged to make further notes as the course progresses, particularly as the teaching is discussion led. These notes are available to students during the exam.

A resit is possible for anyone failing the exam for an additional fee.

6 CPD points awarded.

Electronic certificates will be sent directly to successful candidates to the email address we hold on file.
