Presented by Dr. Tony Rizk, Engineering Training Governing Board (ETGB) Chair
Synopsis:
Tonight’s presentation introduces the forthcoming “Corrosion at Home and Its Prevention” course, aimed at schools, community groups, and public engagement activities, offering practical guidance while encouraging interest in corrosion science.
Corrosion is often seen as an industrial problem, yet it is a common and largely unnoticed issue in the home. This presentation explains corrosion in simple, non-technical language, showing how everyday materials, metals, fixtures, appliances, tools, plumbing, and outdoor structures, deteriorate through natural electrochemical and microbial processes. Although often dismissed as routine wear and tear, domestic corrosion can lead to avoidable costs, safety concerns, and reduced service life of household items.
The session outlines the main factors that drive corrosion in the home, including moisture, temperature changes, galvanic interactions, cleaning chemicals, and microbial activity.
Familiar examples, rusting tools, corroded pipes, battery leakage, testing cookware materials, and appliance degradation, are used to connect basic scientific ideas to everyday experience.
A key message is that corrosion can be controlled or prevented with simple, low-cost actions. Practical steps such as correct cleaning, drying, protective coatings, and appropriate material choices can significantly extend the life of household items and reduce waste.
The presentation also highlights the wider value of public corrosion awareness. Better understanding supports informed decisions about maintenance, sustainability, and safety.
Overall, this pilot presentation shows that corrosion is not only an industrial challenge but a daily household phenomenon—one that can be effectively managed with accessible knowledge and simple preventive steps.
