Details

City & Guilds accredited

ONE-DAY COURSE:  9.15am - 5pm

Lunch and refreshments provided

Printed delegate materials provided

WHO FOR:

This course is designed for people who are at the beginning of their career or require a refresher in monitoring, testing and interpreting the chemical parameters connected with steam boiler water treatment. This course will go back to the basics connected with the water chemistry and the fundamentals of the mechanical workings of steam boilers. However, a basic knowledge of how steam boilers operate and the chemistry connected with these systems is advantageous.

PRE-COURSE PREPARATION:

Delegates with no chemistry background, to secondary school level or above, should complete W252 Water Treatment Chemistry Foundation before attending this course.

It would be beneficial, and make the understanding of the course matreial easier, if you have spent some time in-field with more experienced personnel, carrying out water chemistry testing on staem boilers, but is not essential.

OBJECTIVES:

This course is designed to:

  • Provide an understanding of how differnt types of steam boilers operate.
  • How their operation affects the water chemistry within the boilers.
  • Give delegates a firm background in the objectives and control of water treatment of steam boilers.
  • Explain how chemical treatment programmes and control regimes can minimise the potentiatl problems within these systems.
  • The fundamental of water treatment testing and the basics of how to interpret results.

TOPICS COVERED:

Introduction to the following:

  • A review of the Basic Water Chemistry in relation to steam production.
  • The mechanics and water chemistry of steam raising plant.
  • Understanding the chemistry of important parameters in steam boiler control.
  • Objectives of boiler water treatment.
  • Pre-treatment of raw water to produce water suitable for fire tube boiler make-up.
  • Operational problems associated with base-exchange softeners.
  • Thermal reduction of oxygen in boiler feed water
  • Review of the chemistry and requirements of internal treatment programmes for fire tube steam boilers and control of blowdown.
  • Methods available for treatment of condensate.
  • Boiler Water Service Reports - customer expectations and service provider services/requirements.

ASSESSMENT:

60 minute written exam with 70% pass mark. A resit is possible for anyone failing the exam for an additional fee.

6 CPD points awarded.

Electronic certificates will be sent directly to successful candidates to the email address we hold on file.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The content of this course was previously taught in W016 Cooling & Boiler Water Chemistry Part 1 and as separate course W16B Boiler Water Chemistry Part 1.

This course forms part of the Water Treatment Hot & Cold Water and Steam Boiler Systems qualification.
