Jonathan Waggott will discuss the engineering aspects of hot and cold water systems and how these need to be successfully designed and managed to ensure people are kept safe.

• Water trap seals within Building Drainage Systems are the main, and often the only, form of protection from ingress of contaminated air from the main sewer.
• Air flow and air pressure is more important than water flows in building drainage systems and can communicate harmful pathogens from one part of a building to another.
• Water trap seal vulnerability and transmission of pathogens through pipework due to a process of aerosolization (Bioaerosols) can lead to disease spread within buildings.

Water quality regulators across Europe continually look at improving water quality standards. This session focuses on 3 particular materials that frequently appear in their reports, lead, nickel and synthetic rubbers. These are commonly found in plumbing systems and can be problematical, we'll look at what can be done to minimize problems. There will also be a brief look at what the future may hold.

• Previous cooling tower interventions indicated that some dutyholders had received poor or inadequate service provision.
• In 2019 HSE undertook a novel intervention with Legionella service providers.
