The WMSoc works closely with statutory organisations on relevant matters and has been closely involved in all phases of development of the Health and Safety Commission 'Approved Code of Practice and Guidance L8 - Legionnaires' Disease - the control of legionella bacteria in water systems' and all its previous incarnations.

Recently the HSE has been working on Technical Memoranda to give supplementary information and guidance on aspects of L8; the first document to come from this initiative is the 'Removal of Pack from Cooling Towers for Cleaning'.

The WMSoc was consulted on this and, in consultation with the British Association for Chemical Specialities (BACS) and the Legionella Control Association (LCA), proposed an approach based on risk assessment: in support of this a flowchart and explanatory notes were produced :
